SWS signature member, Robyn Jorde will give a demonstration of her methods and materials for using watercolor on paper prepared with acrylic gesso. Painting this way gives the artist lots of splishy splashy play time because it is so easy to reactivate and remove paint later.

While it is easy to remove paint from the gessoed surface, adding additional paint needs to be done without disturbing the previous layer. The same application techniques are exciting when used on regular watercolor paper. Workshop participants will experiment with ways to apply watercolor without a brush, using tools like sticks, stamps, sponges, and many others.

Be sure to come with a playful attitude!

A former graphic designer and illustrator, Robyn was also an oil painter for years before becoming interested in the transparent layering possible with watercolor. During the process of learning to work with those layers, she discovered that what she liked even more was the free and fluid blending of colors, along with all the happy accidents that occur. This led her to her current way of working, which now also often incorporates other watermedia such as gouache, ink, and acrylic.

Robyn’s work has been accepted in many juried shows and she has won several awards, including the “Best of Show” in the 2018 Southwestern Watercolor Society show. One of her paintings was selected for installation as a mural in downtown Dallas, where it was on display for the year 2020. More of her work can be seen at https://www.robynjorde.com.

"We will examine the fundamentals of watercolor painting to assure that all students are familiar with the techniques. We will discuss and apply the principles and elements of design so they will be woven into your painting experience. This will be an opportunity to develop a loose and impressionistic technique while keeping your subject strongly in focus."

SWS one-day classes are held in the Marsh Lane Baptist Church community room with nearby parking. Participants can bring lunch and use the adjacent kitchen with a refrigerator and microwave. Reference photos and a supply list will be provided later. If you have any questions, please contact Gail Chandler at gchandler01@sbcglobal.net or 972-948-8465.
